"Breakfast" in South Padre
The weekend of our
engagement started off very boring. Friday and Saturday night, all of my
friends would be back visiting their families because we had just finished
final exams and my fiance, Philip, would be at his brother's bachelor party
about two hours away. That night, he drove back to Dallas and called me
to see what I was up to. At the time of his call, I was on Facebook and
saw that our friend had been proposed to that evening, so I told him about it.
Then I said I was bored and was considering painting my nails. He
was oddly encouraging of this idea and agreed that yes, I should paint my
nails. I ended up painting them a color called "Show Me the
Ring" by Essie, maybe because I was thinking about our friend's recent
The next morning (Sunday) he had
me wake up at 6:30am telling me that we had a surprise double-date
with our friends in Fort Worth. This didn't seem absurd because Philip
and his friend have done surprise double-dates for us before. He told me he
felt bad that I was bored all weekend and he had decided the night before with
his friend to do this double date. Still confused as to why this had to
happen at 6:30am, he said that the date started with breakfast, which seemed
plausible considering our friends live nearly 45 minutes away and that the
"breakfast location" was a little far from them. He also told
me to bring a swimsuit because we'd be "on the water all day", which
I figured meant the lake or the Six Flags Water Park between Dallas and Fort
Worth. So we got in the car and drove to "breakfast."
I believed everything he
said until we pulled in to the airport. Then I knew we were not meeting anyone for breakfast. I was in the middle of telling him a
story as we pulled in to the airport and as we did, I completely stopped
talking. He asked me what was wrong and all I could say was, "I'm
distracted." He said, "good", and pulled out a dozen roses
from the back seat of my car. At this point, I knew he'd be proposing but
I still didn't know where we were going. I asked when we'd be coming
back, since it was a Sunday, and we worked Monday. It turned out he took
off work on Monday and had even called my boss to have someone cover for me on
Monday! We ended up flying to Brownsville, TX and then driving to South
Padre Island, TX where I was anxious for the rest of the day wondering when
he'd propose. He ended up taking a "nap" with the excuse that
he was tired from his brother's party, so I went to sit on the balcony.
While I thought he was napping, he went downstairs and gave a camera to a
woman at the front desk. Then he "woke up" and suggested we
take a walk on the beach. Meanwhile, the woman with the camera followed us
as he proposed on the beach!
color-coordinated our outfits to match the water. It was beautiful,
heartfelt, special, and very "us" to be at the beach. It
couldn't have been a more perfect proposal.
