One Year Early
Wesley and Nicole began dating towards the end of high
school. After a few years of a slightly long-distance relationship in college
the realized they were meant to be together and wanted to get married. The only
thing holding them back was... a proposal! They had decided to not get married
until after graduation, which wasn't for another two years. So, logically the
two would become engaged a year before graduation. But, Wesley knew he loved
Nicole and wanted to make it official, while also surprising Nicole (a rarity!)
by proposing a year early.
He found the perfect timing when Nicole's family from
Chicago came down to visit in San Antonio and he was due to head off for two
months of Army training. He decided to take Nicole out on a "last romantic
date before he left." He picked one of their favorite restaurants, the
location of his personal favorite date from the days right before he headed off
to college freshman year. The Gristmill in Gruene, TX is a beautiful restaurant
in a historic Texas countryside town. Wesley had taken Nicole there as a last
date before the beginning of college and it was that night that he knew he and
Nicole had something special, and he wanted it to last.
On June 20, 2011 Wesley and Nicole went to Gruene, TX. They
explored several of the antique shops the historic town has to offer. They then
went to eat at the Gristmill. Now, Nicole is easily embarrassed in public,
so Wesley decided to propose in a more private way. But, getting through dinner
without setting off Nicole's impeccable suspicions proved to be
impossible. She suspected he wanted to propose, but he desperately denied it,
trying to hold onto some element of surprise.
After dinner, as the two were walking slowly back to the
car, Nicole jokingly mentioned that if Wesley were to propose he better have
asked her dad first! At that point, Wesley stopped Nicole and looked at her
right in the eye. He said he had actually already asked her dad about marrying her
and that he had given his blessing. Wesley then told Nicole how much he loved
her and how he wanted nothing more than to spend the rest of his life with her
(she doesn't recall much of what he said as she began tearing up very quickly).
He then bent on one knee, pulled out the Tiffany ring and asked Nicole to marry
him. She said yes, but only after some coaxing since she was crying so much!
